penang must try day 1

September 6, 2009 at 6:06 PM (Makan-Makan)

I was having my semester break for 2 week’s so I decided to visit manyaw(currently he’s working there) and have a food trip with him at Penang at the end of my semester break, what make thing’s easy for me is that chef Manyaw’s cousin was kind enough to let me stay at his house.  His cousin joined us for our food trip too and was our chauffeur for the two days food trip since he has a car (manyaw’s car was in the workshop at that time..)

Our first destination was to nasi kandar line clear which was the most famous nasi kandar shop in Penang. If you’re born in Penang and you have haven tried this yet, I gotta say shame on you….

I didn’t get the chance to take picture’s of that place and also the nasi kandar itself as my camera phones battery went dead as we reach there…. but I’ll give a detailed description on what we guys had throughout the first day of our food trip.

I had one plater for rm5.60 with 2 ladies finger + one big fried chicken. (recommend to go) cheap like hell

The place is located just off Penang Road, on your left.

30082009605

The stall is in between the two shops, in the middle of the picture. Special eh?

30082009606

The whole shop stretches to the back alley, and on the wall there are picture’s of local celeb’s eating there.

Next stop we went to the ever famous teow chew cendol located just 2 minutes walk away from the nasi kandar shop itself.

Beside the cendol there are Char Keoy Teow and asam laksa beside the stall in a kopitia shop, we didnt try that because we just had nasi kandar for god sake!

The place was crowded with wave after wave of customer keep coming in for the cendol… personally I think the cendol was overprice at RM1.70 per bowl & the ingredients wasn’t as much as I expected…

But their cendol did taste abit more fragrant. But I still prefer cendol klang for loads of ingredients!!

RM1.70 per bowl ( expensive ) so so only, nothing special bout it. Cendol Klang still top’s my cendol list.

30082009611

As you can see here, the cendol stall is on the left. And the kopitiam which sell’s Char Koey Teow and asam laksa is just beside the cendol stall.

30082009612

Too much exposure… Bad shot from me : )

camera battery went dead but we have Yam cake at new world park + ais kacang ( ais kacang was terrible ), Yam cake still taste great (recommended to try the Yam cake RM2.00 per piece, you will know which shop is selling the Yam cake for you will see customer’s lining up to buy the Yam Cake.

After that we went for coconut jelly at Abu Siti Lane, the Abu Siti Lane coconut shop wasn’t the shop I intended to go ( wrong address), but both shop sells cocnut drinks and coconut jelly. The indian dude gave us unchilled coconut jelly so the experience was kind of dissapointing. Will also recommend you to try the coconut drink!!
The correct shop address was at Jalan Dato Keramat, with the brand “Penang’s Coconut Jelly”. If it ain’t chilled, forget about it!!

Then we guys went back to manyaw’s cousin house to recharge ourself with an hour’s plus of good ol sleep : )

Later on we woke up and continued with our food trip to this hainan western food shop which is recommended by Ah Xian ( The famous guy who recommends good food on astro )
The shop is located at Jalan Mount Erskine, Tanjung Tokong, 10470 Penang, the shop is easily spotted on your right, situated in a housing area, mamak style shop.
I seriously recommend this place as the food’s was cheap and better yet taste great!! Chicken maryland was good, and the fish with cordon bleu was good too ” I’ll try other stuff’s when I go back there next time : )

30082009613

The shop is rather simple, you can see some picture’s of Ah Xian too.

30082009628

The fish with cordon bleu inside it

30082009629

The chicken Maryland, this is good. Real GOOD!

30082009630

There’s a piece of ham inside the fish with cordon bleu too

After having the hainan western food, we went on to have the famous satay sold by chinese’s at lorong baru, located at lorong baru. Apparently this is the busy place for tourist’s rather than local’s here.
Love the pork satay, “Highly” I mean highly recommended! Other than that there are many more food’s such as Char Kuey Kak, chee chong fun, fried chicken, popiah, etc etc etc. We didn’t try anything else as we were bloated after having so much to eat the whole day.

30082009633

Sorry for the exposure, I really need to work on my night shot’s…

30082009648

30082009652

We ordered the chicken and pork satay, the pork satay was extremely good!! A MUST TRY!!

And that’s all for my first day food trip in Penang, continue on day 2……..

penang must try day 2

September 6, 2009 at 5:27 PM (Makan-Makan)

Was a good sleep, a really good sleep for me, every sleep is a good sleep for me : )

Set my mobile phone alarm at 8am, but I snoozed it 3 times to make it 830 : )

Manyaw’s cousin woke up and he woke him up, and manyaw proceeded to woke me up :)
First we wanted to try Penang’s most famous dim sum shop (Zim Sum Shop) located along anson road, slightly opposit KDU college. But we didnt went there as it was quite far away from manyaw’s cousin house. So we settle for another dim sum shop called Maxim Dim Sum near his cousin’s house. No complain’s from me as the dim sum was good too, the place was crowded!!

31082009656

31082009657

31082009661

By the way if you were to try the Zim Sum shop on weekends you must reach there before 8am. Or you’ll be standing there waiting for a table. Like they say “迟起床的小鸟没有虫吃”, basically means wake up early to reach there!

Okay now all three of us are pretty full, all because manyaw and his cousin keep on taking dim sum and we keep walloping. We continue driving to Kek Lok Si for Manyaw and his cousin wanted to do some prayer’s and to try the famous Asam Laksa. To be honest, the asam laksa is nothing to shout about. My personal opinion.. don’t go there. It’s watery and the soup is not thick enough, look at my picture’s and you’ll get what I really mean. But the curry puff and the sea coconut drink was good. The curry puff is located opposite of the asam laksa stall. The sea coconut drink is just beside the asam laksa stall, the guy will ask what you wan to drink anyway.

31082009684

31082009693

Asam Laksa so so…. Sea coconut drink LOVE IT!!!

Next we went to Jalan Burma for the popular RM0.30 cent Apong Guan. It’s located just few blocks away from Him Hiang Tam Bun Peah shop. The stall is easy to spot on your left. There are two people managing the stall ( the uncle himself, and the uncle’s gf…. nah just kidding ( his mother most probably ). And best of all the uncle was funny & generous enough to show us his quick banana chopping skills. Long story about the banana chopping thing, I can tell you more if you belanja me yam cha la. And his mother ( most probably ) has a cheerful face despite her age, she was happy and cheerful all the time. Just by looking at her you will put a smile on your face. Take a look at the picture : ) Tasted the apong guan and we have nothing to complain, it was soft and creamy which tasted great. You guys must try this when you’re at Penang!! By the way it’s priced at RM0.30 per piece, only a fool will complain…..

31082009701

The uncle and his mother were very kind, they even purposely told some of the costumer to get into some shady area’s because there were beaming sun light’s over the customer

31082009707

It’s good to see people doing their jobs enthusiastly and cheerful at the same time!!

Next stop, we headed down from the same Jalan Burma road to have the famous Mee Rebus at Seng Lee Cafe. Unfortunately the shop was close for two day’s ( Merdeka Holiday )… So we have to settle for another corner coffee shop which is few blocks away from Seng Lee Cafe which is called “Kedai Kopi Swee Kong” ( infront of pulau tikus police station ), the kopitiam had other stalls which sell’s char kuey teow, persembur (indian rojak), and other foods we didnt care to try (we were quite full that time). So we ordered Mee Goreng as the Mee Rebus sudah habis. We didnt have high expectation for this particular mee goreng, but to our surprise the Mee Goreng tasted quite good! And I would recommend you guys to try this stalls mee goreng if Seng Lee Cafe is close.

31082009713

The Kopitiam with the famous Mee Rebus closed for Merdeka Holiday…..

31082009729

The corner kopitiam “Kedai Kopi Swee Kong”

31082009715

The kopitiam is classic itself, which make’s it even better to eat here : )

31082009716

When he cook’s he look’s like he’s on crack, seriously

31082009714

You don’t see this often do you

31082009717

No 3D man, all in 2D drawing’s back then. Classic!!

31082009720

Yum Yum!!

Manyaw’s cousin finished the Mee Goreng while we went to buy some apong balik outside of the kopitiam, the apong balik stall is special itself as the owner uses carcoal to make the apong balik. The apong balik is priced at RM1.00 for jagung filling while RM0.80 for biasa ( without jagung fillings ). You can only find these kind of apong balik in Penang, it’s freaking different with KL’s apong balik. Load’s of filling’s, a perfect apong balik indeed. Recommended to try when you’re in town :)

31082009722

31082009726

The charcoal he uses”

And so I ended my food trip here (lazy to write more..),

with so much food yet to try on my food list. I can only promise you one thing!!

I will be back in PENANG with more kaki’s for round 2,3,4,5……!!!

yaki yaki buffet

August 28, 2009 at 4:00 AM (Makan-Makan)

Was having my holiday’s when me and my friend wanted to try this yaki-yaki buffet at bukit bintang.

The location of this yaki-yaki buffet is just beside lowyat plaze, you can easily find parking at either BB plaza or sungei wang. Walk to the ground floor and walk to lowyat plaza main entrance. Basically yaki-yaki buffet is infront of you maybe 500m away?

Just walk straight pass the lowyat plaza and eventually you’ll see it. It’s really easy to find the place.

Reach there bout 650 – 7pm, our booking time 630.. typical malaysian timing ( traffic jam of course )….

Rather surprising is that they have a 30% promotion from 5.30 – 7.30pm. So we were rather lucky to have booked 6.30 which entitle us 30% discount instantly. And one more surprising thing is they serve BASKIN ROBBINS!!

Picture TIME :

Pros : Rather worth my money as I wallop alot of baskin robbins, staff’s and service very good. There’s this indon or foreign guy, he’s quite funny. When we were leaving he said “See you tommorow ah” respect man lolz”

Cons : No fragrant coconut anymore, ask the staff he said : sudah lama tak ada…. , no unagi, and alot of stuff’s.

Selection to choose are few. That’s all I have to complain. I’m not really a picky person anyways.

ss2 murni

August 28, 2009 at 2:28 AM (Makan-Makan)

This is the famous SS2 Restaurant Murni, where is it? It’s just behind KFC SS2. Easy to spot as the crowded people sitting and waiting for the table’s along the shop’s at night. I can’t describe how far their table’s are placed. But to give you a slight clue, imagine the shops occupied 10 – 15 normal malaysia shop lot or kedai runcit : ) I KID YOU NOT!! It’s true! It’s true!

But I don’t really fancy murni that much as the price and the unhygiene of this place really put’s me off.

Two of the famous food in mruni, top is the Mee Raja and bottom is Roti Hawaii.
