penang must try day 2

September 6, 2009 at 5:27 PM (Makan-Makan)

Was a good sleep, a really good sleep for me, every sleep is a good sleep for me : )

Set my mobile phone alarm at 8am, but I snoozed it 3 times to make it 830 : )

Manyaw’s cousin woke up and he woke him up, and manyaw proceeded to woke me up :)
First we wanted to try Penang’s most famous dim sum shop (Zim Sum Shop) located along anson road, slightly opposit KDU college. But we didnt went there as it was quite far away from manyaw’s cousin house. So we settle for another dim sum shop called Maxim Dim Sum near his cousin’s house. No complain’s from me as the dim sum was good too, the place was crowded!!

By the way if you were to try the Zim Sum shop on weekends you must reach there before 8am. Or you’ll be standing there waiting for a table. Like they say “迟起床的小鸟没有虫吃”, basically means wake up early to reach there!

Okay now all three of us are pretty full, all because manyaw and his cousin keep on taking dim sum and we keep walloping. We continue driving to Kek Lok Si for Manyaw and his cousin wanted to do some prayer’s and to try the famous Asam Laksa. To be honest, the asam laksa is nothing to shout about. My personal opinion.. don’t go there. It’s watery and the soup is not thick enough, look at my picture’s and you’ll get what I really mean. But the curry puff and the sea coconut drink was good. The curry puff is located opposite of the asam laksa stall. The sea coconut drink is just beside the asam laksa stall, the guy will ask what you wan to drink anyway.

Asam Laksa so so…. Sea coconut drink LOVE IT!!!

Next we went to Jalan Burma for the popular RM0.30 cent Apong Guan. It’s located just few blocks away from Him Hiang Tam Bun Peah shop. The stall is easy to spot on your left. There are two people managing the stall ( the uncle himself, and the uncle’s gf…. nah just kidding ( his mother most probably ). And best of all the uncle was funny & generous enough to show us his quick banana chopping skills. Long story about the banana chopping thing, I can tell you more if you belanja me yam cha la. And his mother ( most probably ) has a cheerful face despite her age, she was happy and cheerful all the time. Just by looking at her you will put a smile on your face. Take a look at the picture : ) Tasted the apong guan and we have nothing to complain, it was soft and creamy which tasted great. You guys must try this when you’re at Penang!! By the way it’s priced at RM0.30 per piece, only a fool will complain…..

The uncle and his mother were very kind, they even purposely told some of the costumer to get into some shady area’s because there were beaming sun light’s over the customer

It’s good to see people doing their jobs enthusiastly and cheerful at the same time!!

Next stop, we headed down from the same Jalan Burma road to have the famous Mee Rebus at Seng Lee Cafe. Unfortunately the shop was close for two day’s ( Merdeka Holiday )… So we have to settle for another corner coffee shop which is few blocks away from Seng Lee Cafe which is called “Kedai Kopi Swee Kong” ( infront of pulau tikus police station ), the kopitiam had other stalls which sell’s char kuey teow, persembur (indian rojak), and other foods we didnt care to try (we were quite full that time). So we ordered Mee Goreng as the Mee Rebus sudah habis. We didnt have high expectation for this particular mee goreng, but to our surprise the Mee Goreng tasted quite good! And I would recommend you guys to try this stalls mee goreng if Seng Lee Cafe is close.

The Kopitiam with the famous Mee Rebus closed for Merdeka Holiday…..

The corner kopitiam “Kedai Kopi Swee Kong”

31082009715

The kopitiam is classic itself, which make’s it even better to eat here : )

31082009716

When he cook’s he look’s like he’s on crack, seriously

31082009714

You don’t see this often do you

31082009717

No 3D man, all in 2D drawing’s back then. Classic!!

31082009720

Yum Yum!!

Manyaw’s cousin finished the Mee Goreng while we went to buy some apong balik outside of the kopitiam, the apong balik stall is special itself as the owner uses carcoal to make the apong balik. The apong balik is priced at RM1.00 for jagung filling while RM0.80 for biasa ( without jagung fillings ). You can only find these kind of apong balik in Penang, it’s freaking different with KL’s apong balik. Load’s of filling’s, a perfect apong balik indeed. Recommended to try when you’re in town :)

And so I ended my food trip here (lazy to write more..),

with so much food yet to try on my food list. I can only promise you one thing!!

I will be back in PENANG with more kaki’s for round 2,3,4,5……!!!
